The next few years for the city will be challenging and exciting as we evolve to what the city needs to be. I want to be apart of the process as the Third Ward City Commissioner and I am asking the voters to re-elect me as their commissioner.

In A Time of Change

City Commissioner Jim White

Since being on the Commission for over four years I have had the pleasure of assisting in preserving the growth and development of the City; and providing solutions to many of the challenges to maintaining the quality of life and good services for our citizens within an environment of financial uncertainty. I have gotten to know the needs, capabilities and solutions that will provide the best opportunity for the City to fulfill the expectations of our citizens. I believe my continuation as the third ward city commissioner will be in the best interest of our city government and the public.

The City of Grand Rapids is experiencing tremendous institutional growth which is bringing quality medical and educational services and jobs to the area. With this growth we find our city’s revenues struggling to keep up with the demand for services. We can not cut our way into solvency. I am confident that during my next term I can help guide the city to financial stability and growth without cutting essential services and personnel.

For years the heart and soul of Michigan’s economy was tied to the automotive industry located in Detroit. While automotives will continue to be a significant contributor to the economy of Michigan all the production do not need to occur in Detroit. Grand Rapids should be competing to secure new technology companies; companies which contribute to the development alternative energy sources for our automobiles and homes; and which produce medical and public service management technology. We should be proactive in recruiting major service providers who need large offices buildings to house their operations. This would mean jobs and tax revenue to the city.

The public schools are in desperate need of solutions to their financial problems. In my capacity as third ward commissioner I coordinated the formulation of a group of  professionals who developed a financial tool that will enable the schools to generate a significant portion of the revenue they need. The tool was endorsed by Gov. Granholm and the state treasurer and will soon be offered to public schools throughout the state.
